Tires

Of all of the systems, components and parts that make up your vehicle, your tires are the only thing that is in contact with the road. That’s why it’s so important to make sure that your tires are in good condition.

Sometimes it’s obvious when you need a new tire – you’ve run over a nail, the tire is completely deflated or it bursts. But, more frequently, it’s not nearly as obvious as that. Most people don’t pay that much attention to their tires, so long as they are fully inflated. But because they are vital to safety and your vehicle’s performance, it’s important to inspect your tires on a regular basis.

Your tires need sufficient tread depth to disperse water when you are driving in the rain or through puddles. To check your tires’ tread depth, all you need is a penny. Place the penny into the tread with the queen’s crown down. If you can still see the crown – it’s time for new tires!

Newer makes of tires have a tread indicator bars on them that only become obviously visible when the treads have worn down.

Check the sides of your tires. If there are cracks or cuts in the sidewall that look serious, you will want to change that tire as soon as possible.

Tires can also develop bulges, which become weak spots in the tire. Tires with bugles can blow out suddenly and should be replaced immediately.

Too much vibration can also indicate that there is a problem inside the tire, but it can also be a symptom of something else, so it’s best to take it to a professional to be checked out.
